Luke Martin | Graphic Designer, and Multi-Faceted Creative
Q1 Let’s start with your name…
Luke Martin
Q2 What do you do as a freelancer?
I am a graphic designer, and multi-faceted creative, focusing on the arts and theatre spaces creating a variety of events material, event/company branding and other assorted deliverables. I also assist with marketing and social media content for longer term clients.
Q3 How long have you been doing it for?
I have been doing this for the last 5 years off and on, and have made a leap to do this more consistently in the last 6-8 months
Q4 What inspired you to become a freelancer?
I like getting the extra little bit of a side hustle, and also it allows me to create and get involved in an area and clientele that i’m super passionate about and love working with
Q5 What do you think the benefits of being a freelancer are?
More creative freedom and ability to set your own times and hours. Also just being able to engage much more closely with a variety of different creatives
Q6 What are the biggest challenges you think freelancers face at the moment?
Finding consistent work in a time when people are having to cut costs – design and marketing are often seen as less vital to a business because it’s difficult to quantify the revenue or impact it had
Q7 What do you think is the best resource you have found to use as a freelancer?
Notion has been a game changer for me – it allows me to track my own projects and tasks, and also I can share pages with my clients so they can view them as well! Also, they’ve just come out with a calendar app and i’m very excited to see how they can interact
Q8 How have you adapted to freelancing in 2024?
I’m taking it more seriously! I really want to make a business out of it and work across larger clients, so i’m getting into more social media and content creation for myself!
Q9 What one piece of advice would you give to other/aspiring freelancers?
Stick with what you know! And not in a negative sense – find what you are good at, what you love, and what you do well, and then go find the people that are looking for it. I believe that’s how you succeed with freelancing.
Q10 What is your favourite project you have ever worked on?
I’d love to tell you, but it’s a project i’m working on at the moment – so I can’t spill all the details! Let’s just say it’s a little show coming to Melbourne Comedy Festival later this year
